Oh, I know. Trust me. I just got my MFA in fiction. And the bird? That was an intentional thing, to make people wonder if the bird was a demonic sentinel on the lookout for Sam and Dean, a supernatural trope symbolizing death or peril, or just a cold bird. So that way your brain was thinking "bird?" and the old lady being possessed might catch readers off guard.
