So, the problem with you is you're good, and that means sometimes details are just bits of world-building and sometimes they're ominous signs. Bad writers always make them ominous signs. Which means the bird detail is bugging the crap out of me, because the English major in my brain that screamed, "Old lady is possessed" is screaming "Symbol or warning!" even as I respond, "Maybe just a detail!"
Also, this is a terrible thing to say, but your plagiarist at least has good taste. If I see anything like that though I'll definitely point and shout. Sorry that happened to you.
