Sam and Dean started their full relationship before Stanford. Dean does something he thinks is the right thing to do for Sam, but it breaks Sam’s heart and drives him to accept the Stanford offer. In Palo Alto, Sam takes up with a striking Brit named Simon (modeled after Tom Hiddleston as Loki, with the straight black hair), who is full on into BDSM, and takes Sam as his submissive. Sam loses himself in the scene and the training, giving expression to what he has always known about himself, and because it almost distracts him from the pain of not being with Dean. Then Simon pushes Sam’s kink too far, and Sam freaks out, calls Dean, and flees back to his dorm. Dean comes running (having been in the area because he’s made a point of only taking jobs in the Northern California area, unbeknownst to Sam), and is there within the hour. He’s just arrived, when Simon knocks at the door of Sam’s dorm.
