The bird had me thinking of Poe, but I knew there was no way that lady could have just been that sweet and willing to do what the boys wanted without thinking of their welfare.

Her being possessed made sense - especially when what the boys wanted (time away to think and be alone) marries to the plan of Azazel (I would imagine) where getting the boys further isolated and far from safety in numbers will help his grand plan.
