Joss Whedon had a lesbian couple on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Shonda Rhimes who does Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice had several storylines with gay themes and she does have a lesbian couple on Grey's now who are very poignantly portrayed, most of your HBO and Showtime series at least explore it a little if not quite a bit -such as the case with Six Feet Under where David was gay and the show dealt a lot with themes associated with that and how he worried about stigma attached to being a gay mortician, and there are even a lot of queer film coming out lately that has genuinely impressed me. I'd say the most recent one I saw that I enjoyed was A Single Man with Colin Firth in which he wants to end his life because his partner is gone, but most people remember the scene with Eric Danes and Bradley Cooper in Valentine's Day where Eric Danes is a football player who comes out as gay so that he can get his lover back. That was a big deal at the time, too, since both of them are considered sex symbols.
If you're looking for real progression in mainstream fiction? JR Ward. She's miraculous. I actually felt very moved by her fight to get to tell her character's stories as they are to her. She writes a vampire series called The Black Dagger Brotherhood and since the beginning she has had a gay male vampire couple who are struggling to be together. Her publication house originally said that since she was a mainstream writer whose audience was largely heterosexual females (as her books are heterosexual romance novels, this is unsurprising), they felt that a novel staring a gay male couple would not be received well. They wanted her to cut their story down to a novella. She refused. She pointblank refused. Next month in March, her book Lover at Last will be released and it stars a male vampire who is in love with another male vampire so she will become one of the first mainstream romance novelists to cross over from heterosexual to homosexual literature in the same series. That's amazing to me. Her writing is also very graphic so she's not glossing over the sex like a lot of people did for a while. I'm impressed with the quality of her work. It's unique, has a great over-arcing plot that really is fascinating to me, and she has more than one bisexual or gay couple in the series. Actually, she has one of the Brothers in love with his brother-in-arms who mates with a female and he really does struggle with this very badly because he just can't come to grips with the fact that the man he wants would rather be with a woman than him. They have several good scenes where they talk about that. It's a good series. I'd advocate picking it up. Just ignore the stupid spellings on the names. I got used to it after a while, but it was hard. I have a thing about names. Sam and Dean ftw.
Anyway, it really is out there if you know where to look. It may not all be the rugged style we appreciate from our boys, but the men are diverse and realistic and not just Glee over-the-top. I think you're right in that Destiel will probably never be canon but gay couples do exist in the mainstream media, and there is a market for queer fiction. I have a friend who writes for that market and makes a living doing it.
